Unrefined Foods is focused on creating real, minimally-processed snacks and pantry items made from whole, nourishing ingredients. Founded by Melissa Bermudez and her husband, the company was inspired by the Bermudez’s desire to feed their kids nourishing foods that they could feel good about eating without sacrificing convenience. The company's mission is to shift how people eat by reducing reliance on processed foods and bringing whole-ingredient snacks into busy lifestyles.

CHALLENGE

Unrefined Foods faced the challenge of building brand awareness and establishing credibility as a young company in a competitive healthy food market. Despite offering minimally processed, convenient snacks that differentiated Unrefined Foods from other brands, the brand lacked a broad media presence across different channels. The company needed to strengthen its presence on social media with content that balanced promoting products and Melissa’s personal lifestyle. Additionally, the brand needed to conduct more outreach to podcasts, journalists, influencers, farmers markets, and other companies to build credibility among third-parties. Unrefined foods also needed to clearly communicate to its target audience–busy, young parents in the Northeast– what sets Unrefined Foods products apart from other healthy food companies.

STRATEGY

Initially, the team began by agreeing on the scope of work with the client, through a proposed PR Plan. This included:

Social Media Strategy: Developing a cohesive social media presence across platforms by creating a content calendar with scheduled posts, based on audience research.

Media Outreach: Securing earned media placements by building a segmented list and reaching out to relevant local to Boston media outlets across different categories of wellness, food and lifestyle/mom content.

Influencer Partnerships: Build a list of influencers that align with Unrefined Foods’ content, and conduct outreach to secure a cost-effective partnership.

Our strategy is focused on shaping a cohesive brand narrative that balances product promotion and lifestyle content, and securing earned media coverage and influencer partnerships to build third-party credibility.

RESULTS

  • Sent 20 pitch emails and 3 DMs to contacts on our Targeted Media & Influencer List, spanning The Boston Globe, Cambridge Day Newspaper, and Boston Moms

  • Drafted 6 scripts and captions for Unrefined Foods Instagram page which we organized into a content calendar that we built from scratch to translate content brainstorming ideas into storytelling formats

  • Successfully secured 2 future partnerships: 1 podcast feature with Boston Moms and a collaboration with influencer Kara Lydon
