Why Communications?

I think I was in 10th grade when I decided I wanted to be a Communications major.

The thing is, it was the only field that I felt that I could go into and actually make a decent living – but I didn’t even really know what studying communication meant. All I knew was that I loved English, and I wanted to have a career that would let me utilize my writing skills without teaching.

When I told my parents, they were skeptical but let me pursue it. I wasn’t even really sure how to explain what this was to my friends or relatives who asked. Compared to the law and medicine, communications is a new field. All in all, I didn’t know what I was signing up for going into college.

And here’s the thing: I’m an indecisive person. But in my three years at Boston University, this has been one of the best and surest decisions that I’ve made. To me, COM combines my love of storytelling with interpersonal relationships. I love my COM classes, and I feel that being a public relations major has opened up and will continue to open up a realm of possibilities for me. I’ve been able to intern at different firms both big and small in a variety of areas that I enjoy – so far, food and fashion.

It’s an ever-evolving major and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
